Breakthrough: Growing New Teeth as an Adult May Soon Be Possible!

The world’s first tooth-regeneration drug will enter clinical trials later this year.

As an alternative to teeth implants, the Japanese-based startup Toregem Biopharma is aiming to release a treatment that will aid the body in naturally growing teeth. Should the 2024 and 2025 trials go well, the drug would likely hit the market in 2030.

The startup is mainly aimed at those who suffer from congenital anodontia, a condition that affects about 0.1 per cent of the population and inhibits teeth from growing. The drug, however, could also be offered to those who lose teeth later in life. The drug’s antibody targets a specific protein, stimulating it to develop tooth buds in the jaw and forming new teeth. The startup believes the drug would be sold at $9,800 – substantially cheaper than many teeth-replacing alternatives, such as veneers, on the market today.
